The plastic waste problem exists in every corner of the world. Cities, mountain tops, remote beaches, places with no industry or waste system in place. We need solutions everywhere.

Open source is the most scalable way to get there. Instead of sending a team to every location, we publish what we know and let people act locally. One solution, released once, can reach thousands of places simultaneously. That's something no organisation could achieve by deploying people on the ground.

But it goes further than reach. When people build our tools in their own context they adapt them, improve them, and share what they learned. A recycler in Indonesia solves a problem we never encountered in Germany. That knowledge comes back into the community and makes the solution better for everyone.

We don't just deploy solutions, we learn from the people using them. Everything we develop is published online for free. Blueprints, schematics, code, drawings, graphic posters. All licensed under Creative Commons Attribution-Sharealike 4.0, so anyone can use, adapt and share it freely.

We believe useful knowledge shouldn't have a price.

We're open source in the sense that we share all the information, code, drawing and source material online. For free. However, the production of these solutions and knowledge is centralised at the Precious Plastic headquarter.

Hardware development is quite different from software. And we haven't found a way to fully involve everyone in the creation of knowledge.
