How we helped hobby recyclers become professionals

PRO machines are the heavy-duty versions of our original designs. They let a growing workspace take on far larger volumes of plastic, so a recycler who has outgrown the basics has somewhere to go next. The plans are waiting for the day they are ready. 

Precious Plastic set out to take recycling out of the big factories and put it in the hands of regular people. To do that, we focused on small, affordable machines. They were great for teaching and for hobby use.

But they had a ceiling. If you wanted to recycle plastic by the tonnes and build a business on it, the small machines could not keep up. They were too slow, and they could not run all day without wearing out fast.

So we set out to build a line that could.

The small machines are easy to build but slow, and they cannot run for long. So we made tougher versions of each, shaped around what a working business actually needs:

The PRO Shredder. We went from one axis of blades to two, which pulls plastic in more steadily, and we made the whole thing come apart easily for cleaning and repair.

The PRO Extruder. A bigger screw feeds in more plastic, so it can run all day without choking, and better sensors make it safer to operate.

The Sheetpress. A whole new machine, built from scratch, that turns shredded plastic into large flat sheets. Sheets open the door to all kinds of commercial work while processing serious volume.

Business Model bonus: We did not stop at machines. Recycling is good, but recycling that pays the rent is better, so we built business models to go with them, so people could do this full-time.

The result is a semi-industrial setup: more than a hobbyist needs, less than a factory, and able to process materials industry will not touch. Affordable enough for a small team, powerful enough to matter.

Then we released it all, and the possibilities widened. For the first time people could make not just products but raw material: large sheets and sturdy beams that become benches, shelving and more. We developed new products to go with them too.

The PRO machines and the business models together let recyclers grow like they could not before. In 2019, the average workspace was making around €7,279 a year. By 2023, after the PRO machines, the average project was making about $25,000.

That is not just a bigger number. It is hundreds of new local jobs, tonnes of plastic kept out of the landfill and the environment, and thousands more people learning what plastic waste really costs.

And because gathering data across a decentralised community is hard, only around 10% of registered locations took part in the survey. The real figure is far higher.

Our mission is to cut plastic waste, but every year more plastic is made and more of it ends up in the environment. To keep up, we cannot just grow the number of recyclers. We have to grow how much each of them can handle.

The PRO line takes a recycler from kilos a year to tonnes a year. It also gives a naturally growing business a clear next step, instead of leaving people to guess their way through scaling up. We want recycling to lead to real, growing businesses that improve the lives of the people running them and the places they clean up.
